Presentations to years 11 and 7 at norbury manor business and enterprise college

We are proud to say that The TalkEasy Trust recently presented an hour-long assembly at Norbury Manor School in Croydon to the Year 11s and were invited back just a week later to deliver a slightly shorter assembly to the Year 7s!

We really enjoy going into schools and delivering these kind of sessions - not only do we feel like we're helping people learn about mental illness but everyone who takes part gains valuable skills and develops as an activist. Thanks go to Amber, George, Nick, Tom and Kieran for presenting and also Henna for her amazing work in sorting everything out for us!

Domestic violence seminar  at croydon high school

Hi everyone, Dom here. I'd like to tell you about my experience of going to a conference today at Croydon High School to hear more about domestic violence and remove some of the myths that surround this topic.

I'm not sure I've ever heard something quite as powerful as the recording of a 5 or 6 year old girl calling the police 'because Daddy was hitting Mummy.' The cries of terror to the operator and screams as the situation worsened upset many people to the point of stunned disbelief. However it really hit home some very important facts.

1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence in some form during their life.

1 in 6 men will also suffer.

I found these numbers quite simply numbing.

How could we be so oblivious to such an important issue? It's reported that it is the most quoted reason for people becoming homeless. This then can open the door to a wide variety of mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. I find this simply staggering.

I'd like to thank all the staff and students at Croydon High who put on such an interesting and informative seminar. I hope to be back soon to learn more. I'd also like to point out that I was very impressed at how such a delicate subject was presented. It truly inspired me to go out there and spread more awareness.

On the 19th February 2015 the TalkEasy Trust was proud to take part in a health and well being awareness event at the Quad Youth Centre in Sutton. We had a stand there to interact with the public and we also delivered a workshop to the public on the subject of mental health and mental illness. There were other activities there such as smoothie making, Zumba, meditation sessions and massages! There were various other organisations there who were campaigning around many different areas such as sexual health and LGBT issues.

We were also very pleased to meet the Heal Our World foundation who are campaigning to help disadvantaged children reach their goals. They very aptly pointed out that mental illness may be seen by some as a limiting factor in an individual's progression and this was something they identified needed to change. Make sure you visit them on http://healworldfoundation.org.uk/ and on Twitter at: https://twitter.com/healourworlduk.

We want to thank the Sutton Youth Service who organised the event and the great people from the Quad Youth Centre who helped us out on the day! We also thank those who took the time to sign our pledge of support that we brought along with us. The pledge reads:

"I pledge my support for the TalkEasy Trust and for bringing change about in attitudes and support for mental illness."

Completion of the our place project within sutton

Our Place was a Sutton Council-led, partnership project seeking to improve outcomes for people with mental health conditions. It did this by addressing two wider determinants of mental health - community connectedness and employment - through initiatives that looked to improve understanding of mental health, build capacity in the voluntary sector, and join together organisations that support people with mental health issues into employment.

The project was advised by a Steering Group made up of local voluntary sector organisations that are focused on mental health. The TalkEasy Trust was one such organisation, represented by myself as Director of the Trust. I contributed to the Steering Group's discussions, played a key role in delivering events to mark World Mental Health Day and assisted the Council in scoring the tenders when it commissioned a new mental health training programme. I immensely enjoyed my time on this group!

Presentation to  around 500 students on the subject of mental health and mental illness

Our Director Dom describes his experience of presenting to a whole school of girls (yikes!) and why he enjoyed it:

'I recently delivered an assembly to Queen Anne's School in Caversham, Reading. It was to nearly 500 girls aged 11-18, so there was quite a wide spectrum in the audience. The assembly covered areas such as: what is mental health?, high achievers who had mental health issues, common mental health issues facing young people today, how to look after yourself and final notes on my involvement with the TalkEasy. I also delivered a Q and A to an A2 Psychology class about my personal motives for getting involved with the TalkEasy as well as where I see it going in the future. I found this to be a very useful as well as enjoyable experience.

World Mental health day 2014

Our Director Dom talks about his experiences of the TalkEasy's involvement in a mental health awareness fair:

'As part of my role as the Director of the TalkEasy Trust I'd been working closely with the London Borough of Sutton on all things mental health. One of my main endeavours with them was the TalkEasy Trust's presence at their Mental Health Fair on October 10th to celebrate World Mental Health Day. It involved coordinating TalkEasy Trust volunteers who were helping in a variety of roles from directing people to other stands and encouraging the public to stop and talk about mental health. I also took an active role in getting out there and talking with the public - although I'm not sure if I did very well compared to some of the other guys! Although I did find it challenging sorting out volunteers who were going to be there on the day, (not to mention the logistical challenge of taking all our resources with us and not losing them on the day,) I immensely enjoyed the experience!

New leadership of the trust

In late 2014 the TalkEasy Trust underwent many changes. Many of the people involved with the Trust moved onto new things and a new group of boys and girls stepped up to the challenge. All in all, around 40 boys from the John Fisher Sixth Form pledged their commitment to the Trust in some way - a number everyone was simply staggered by. We're looking forward to what the brings and we hope you'll join us for the journey!

mind visit talk easy                                                   10/07/2013

On the 10th July 2013, 15 members from The Talk Easy Trust attended a morning of training on mental health and well-being which was given to us by MIND.

The course was great today as it gave all of us a more in depth understanding on everyone’s mental health.
It was also very good because we learn about the types of mental health and choosing the right one for a different case scenario and explaining what you can do in order to help the situation.
Most of the members found this great because it was interesting and got your brain thinking about which one goes for each scenario.

Furthermore, we all learned a new statistic about mental health for example:
‘Did you know 70% of people who see their GP have a mental health problem!’

Our trainer who provided us with the training was great and we all learnt a lot from the session! We at Talk Easy recommend the training by MIND!

Carshalton Girls Assembly

Picture
Representatives from the Talk Easy Trust delivered an assembly to Year 10 students today, together with Zoe, 10SD and Sammie, 10JEL, who already volunteer for the charity.

The Trust runs an independent and confidential support service for victims of bullying and depression.  Within school, there will be three drop in sessions per week at lunchtime which will be run by student counsellors from this school.

The Trust has had an amazing response from the girls and we look forward to forming a greater link with the school in the future.
